Kathryn Bigelow has joined the ranks among my favorite filmmakers, which includes James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, George Lucas, Stephen Spielberg, and brothers Ridley and Tony Scott. With the films Blue Steel, Strange Days, The Hurt Locker, and Zero Dark Thirty, the former model and Oscar winner has established herself as a top action director.
In fact, Kathryn Bigelow directed one of my all-time favorite films, Point Break. I've seen this movie so many times, and I love its unique story of irony about a relationship that gets complicated when the protagonist and antagonist become friends.
When the remake of this classic was announced a few years ago, it was met with some negative reaction. Released 24 years after the first one, the new Point Break movie didn't fare well with critics and audiences alike, and this is regrettable.
Even though he took some creative liberties with the characters and plot points, I think screenwriter Kurt Wimmer brilliantly enhanced and expanded on the original storyline. After seeing the 2015 version of Point Break again, I decided to upgrade my rating of the film to ★★★★½☆.
