G.I. Jane

I've been showcasing Tony Scott films and thought it's time to select a work from his older brother, Ridley Scott. He's best known for classics like Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator, but, believe it or not, my favorite movie from the legendary filmmaker is G.I. Jane.

We've seen U.S. special forces represented in movies all the time, but in past years, it's been mostly the United States Navy Sea, Air, and Land Teams, or SEALs--e.g., Lone Survivor, Act Of Valor, Tears Of The Sun, The Abyss. There was even a so-so movie called Navy SEALs in 1990 that tried to be like Top Gun with the machismo turned up to 11.

But in contrast to that Charlie Sheen film, Ridley Scott's approach to the portrayal of SEALs was far more realistic, while addressing sexism in the military.

I've always thought it was a silly title for a movie, but G.I. Jane accurately portrays the exhaustive and intensive Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training. I should know. I watched documentaries about the Navy SEALs on the Discovery Channel.

Starring Demi Moore with Anne Bancroft and Viggo Mortensen (Lord Of The Rings trilogy, Crimson Tide) . . .
