Deepwater Horizon

Generally, stories don't have a protagonist without an antagonist. And over a few decades, Hollywood has characterized various "bad guys" from particular racial groups (regrettably) to politicians to aliens.

But antagonists are not always violently evil. For many years, one entity that continues to be a recurring adversary in movies is greedy corporations. After all, people with low moral and ethical standards should be vilified--especially when their actions have catastrophic consequences resulting in the loss of innocent lives.

Peter Berg may not be as recognizable as some A-list directors, but he has become one of those filmmakers whose movies I want to see, even without seeing the trailer or knowing who is in the film. His best movies include The Kingdom with Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner, and Lone Survivor and Patriots Day with Mark Wahlberg.

In his films based on actual events, Peter Berg strives for authenticity, yet they can be very intense without exaggerations. This is evident in Deepwater Horizon, which Berg directed, about the 2010 BP oil rig disaster off the coast of Louisiana. With all the suspense, action, and corporate greed, Deepwater Horizon is ultimately a human story about ordinary people becoming extraordinary in the worst situations possible.

Further, the editing and cast in Deepwater Horizon are outstanding, particularly Kurt Russell and John Malkovich, and the action sequences of the oil rig failure are incredible as they are horrifying. Deepwater Horizon overall demonstrates what a great director Peter Berg is, and if past film productions are any indication, he should join the group of A-listers.
