The Conspirator

Courtroom dramas were very popular in the 90s, but you don't see too much of this genre these days.

However, some years ago, Robert Redford made a film called The Conspirator. James McAvoy, who is such a great actor (Wanted, X-Men: First Class), plays a former Union captain who becomes the reluctant attorney defending one of the alleged conspirators of the Lincoln assassination.

Robin Wright, who has come a long way since The Princess Bride, has proven herself as a very capable actress, like in Forrest Gump and House Of Cards, and even showed she can do action in Wonder Woman. But of all the films she's been in, one of her most memorable performances has got to be in The Conspirator.

What's unusual about The Conspirator is that, even though there are a protagonist and antagonist, there is really no hero to root for. Who wants to see a leading character win for defending such a horrendous crime?

As in life, things are often not black and white, and the film makes you see both sides and will test your capacity to be objective and unbiased.

Like Westerns, courtroom dramas may not be as popular now as they were in years past, but their stories of mystery and suspense never get old, and yet the courtroom setting hardly changes. The Conspirator is a great movie--not just for this genre, but for any film.
