Trade

Without question, Taken is one of Liam Neeson's best films, and even though it ended happily, the revenge flick left me saddened. It was the first movie I've ever seen to expose the evil world of human sex trafficking in depth. It is repulsive how young people and children get kidnapped and forced into a life of prostitution against their will.

The subject matter is not exactly commercial material, but there have been a few independent films about sex trafficking. Among them are Skin Trade with Dolph Lundgren and The Whistleblower with Academy Award Winner Rachel Weisz. The former is an action movie that's not bad but doesn't come highly recommended, and the latter is a good film, but it has scenes that may be too disturbing for some viewers.

Trade is an excellent and informative film about a young man who goes looking for his sister after she got kidnapped and teams up with an investigator played by Kevin Kline (The Big Chill, Cry Freedom, The Conspirator). There are a few ugly scenes, but without giving away too much, the movie does end on a happier note.

Human sex traffickers are a bunch of animals, using violence and threats to coerce others to do their bidding. But what's sickeningly ironic is that some of the accomplices in these heinous crimes are women.

Awareness about human trafficking shouldn't be reserved for the month of January alone. Sex slavery, in particular, is a human atrocity on the same scale as cancer and the Holocaust that occurs every day worldwide.

The silver lining is that, in recent years, we are hearing more about it in the news and media. And for humanity sake, it is hoped that someday no one, male or female, would ever have to suffer the abusive tormenting of a human sex trafficker.
