Some movies are such straight-up ripoffs, but they're so good you have to see them. George Lucas had said Star Wars was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Forest. Luc Besson (Taken, The Fifth Element) got sued for plagiarizing John Carpenter's Escape From New York with his prison escape film, Lockout, starring Guy Pearce. And there have been numerous remakes and ripoffs of Seven Samurai, like The Magnificent Seven and 13 Assassins.
Another unoriginal film that comes highly recommended is Pitch Black with Vin Diesel. It's almost as if this film got rejected as an Alien sequel (or prequel), so the producers and director David Twohy decided to make their own monster sci-fi thriller.
