I'm a kind, thoughtful human being. And yet, there have been people who have bad-mouth about me and try to question my integrity. As we say, there are two sides to every story, and the worse offenders are the ones who have knee-jerk reactions upon hearing rumors and gossip.
With an all-star cast, The Contender is perhaps the best political thriller about character assassination. The film examines power and human behavior, and it serves as a disheartening reminder that there are devious and malicious individuals, like those portrayed in the film, who live among the human race.
It's not about the left or the right. It's ultimately about doing what is right.
Incidentally, Joan Allen and Jeff Bridges, who played the President, appeared together in George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola's Tucker, a couple of years earlier. Both Allen and Bridges deservingly received multiple nominations for their unforgettable performances in The Contender.
