Batman

Anybody can play a villain that people hate. But a villain that people like? I think that requires some very creative character development and clever dialogue. Then you find the right actor for the role.

There's no question that Joaquin Phoenix is an outstanding actor, but the recent Joker trailer looked rather unexceptional.

It turns out the upcoming DC Universe film is co-produced by Bradley Cooper, which initially seemed like an unusual choice, but then I remembered since Silver Linings Playbook he has been advocating for more awareness about mental health.

Hence, I hope this is a case in which the trailer doesn't do the movie justice.

I've always thought that playing Batman's archnemesis is one of the hardest roles to play because it requires so much energy and enthusiasm, and pulling off the maniacal laugh repeatedly and consistently can't be easy. I believe Cesar Romero, who played the Joker in the 1960s Batman television series, set the standard for the character.

Heath Ledger rightfully got high praise for his performance in The Dark Knight, but everybody seems to have forgotten about Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, who, in my humble opinion, is still the best Joker of all in a film.

Without a doubt, Christopher Nolan made one of the best trilogies ever, but Tim Burton deserves a lot of credit for first visualizing the dark world of Batman and Gotham City for a film that inspired later iterations of the Caped Crusader.

Seldom do you see an actor who plays a villain steal pretty much every scene in a movie, and until the Joker film comes out later this year, watching Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Tim Burton's Batman never gets wearisome.
