Risen

Needless to say, it's not unusual to see heroes in film and television sacrifice themselves for the greater good, and filmmakers sometimes use this as a powerful metaphor for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Movies I've seen about Jesus Christ's life usually lead up to his death and a little bit of his resurrection.

Risen takes a different narrative approach and focuses on events after the Resurrection from the perspective of a Roman tribune who was tasked with finding Jesus' body and bringing it to Pontius Pilate.

Brilliantly written, the film interweaves fiction with historical events and biblical figures, and it's beautifully shot on location.

Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid's Tale, Shakespeare In Love) plays the battle-weary and skeptical Roman officer. As talented as his older brother, Ralph Fiennes, Joseph really carried the movie, and it's a shame he's not taken on more film roles.
