Into The Storm

I grew up in Western Michigan, so the threat of tornadoes is nothing new to me. Thankfully, our first home in America was never damaged by a tornado.

But every now and again, Mother Nature reminds the human inhabitants of this planet, even with all our wisdom and technology, how vulnerable of a species we can be.

It wasn't the first film about tornadoes, but Twister with Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt was a mega-blockbuster when it hit theaters in 1996. It was also a big seller when it came out on video. Heck, I still have my copy of Twister on LaserDisc.

About 18 years later, another film about storm-chasing and tornadoes called Into The Storm came out, but it did not achieve anywhere near the same amount of publicity and success as Twister.

Nonetheless, I think Into The Storm betters Twister with its thoughtful, human story and characters. And adding to that, the intensity of the action sequences is amped up with the clever use of the handheld, documentary style of shooting.

Most notably, the entire cast is all unknowns, and with a first-rate and brilliant script, they all held their own very well. Into The Storm proves you don't necessarily need A-list actors to have a great movie.
