Act of Valor

I have the utmost respect and admiration for the U.S. Navy SEALs, but, nowadays, they have been featured so much in movies and the media it's almost becoming a clichΓ©.

Despite their contributions, there was a time when most people never heard of the United States Sea, Air, and Land Teams, which was first formed in the 1960s.

Not long after, in the Vietnam War, the SEALs played a significant role in advising and training South Vietnamese soldiers, and the SEALs' direct combat with the Viet Cong was likened to "fighting fire with fire."

G.I. Jane from 1997 with Demi Moore and Viggo Mortensen still holds the prize as my top favorite film about the U.S. special operations force, but a little known movie called Act Of Valor comes very close.

What makes Act Of Valor unique is that some of the principal cast members are not professional actors in the conventional sense, but are actual SEAL Team members.

Naturally, some of the acting is a bit wooden, but the script, cinematography, supporting cast members, and, most of all, the intense action sequences--particularly the first one with the search and rescue of the kidnapped CIA agent--more than make up for it.

Simply put, Act Of Valor is among the very best movies about the elite military unit.
