Nighthawks

For decades, the idea of a major domestic terrorist attack in the United States seemed so unlikely, and safety was taken for granted. Even in 1994, a year after the bombing of the World Trade Center, the movie True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger characterized terrorists in a very satirical way.

Then came September 11, 2001, and things were never the same again, completely changing the focus on terrorism in America.

Counter-terrorism has actually been around for well over a century, but after that fateful day, it suddenly had been given a much higher priority and more publicity in this country, leading up to the War on Terror and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.

About twenty years earlier, a film had the foresight about potential terrorist attacks on American soil. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Nighthawks is about a law enforcement task force created to fight terrorism in New York City.

Before his iconic role in Blade Runner, Rutger Hauer played the foreign terrorist in Nighthawks in a way that greatly contrasts to how the terrorists were portrayed in True Lies.

Often playing villains, the Dutch actor always seems to raise the bar in movies he's in. Rutger Hauer is another great actor gone too soon, but he leaves some of the most memorable performances on film.

Nighthawks also co-stars Billy Dee Williams and Lindsay Wagner . . .
