Whiplash

Had I known La La Land was directed Damien Chazelle, I would have gone to see the movie when it first came out.

Damien Chazelle has been an up-and-coming filmmaker in Hollywood, and at age 34, he has already won several awards and nominations.

His breakthrough film was Whiplash from 2014, which was initially a short film that he wrote and directed. You don't see many movies about drummers, and, somewhat shockingly, it's based on Chazelle's personal experiences when he was a music student.

Another shining star is J.K. Simmons, who may be most recognized from TV commercials. Deservedly, his unsettling portrayal of the abusive music teacher in Whiplash won him an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor.
