Imperium

In recalling the reportings about the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, I've always thought it was odd how the news media seemed to have neglected to mention that Timothy McVeigh was a white supremacist.

Even though it was my very first MOVIE OF THE WEEK about a year ago, I want to select Imperium again in light of recent events. Based on the real experiences of an undercover FBI agent, the film is about white supremacists plotting to bomb and cause mass casualties to start a so-called race war.

Sounds familiar? McVeigh was inspired by the novel The Turner Diaries, which involved bombing the FBI headquarters, overthrowing the government, and ethnic cleansing.

In Imperium, Daniel Radcliffe plays an FBI agent who infiltrates white supremacist organizations to uncover the terrorist plot. He's no Harry Potter in this film, and it's one of his best roles yet. Imperium is a superbly written thriller with excellent characters, and it is as eye-opening as it is entertaining.

It's 2019, and it's disheartening to see the sad state of affairs the country has been witnessing, worsened by people who think the evil behavior is justified, or others absurdly trying to shift the blame elsewhere. It's deplorable to have some of the country's leaders whose legacy will forever be defined with prejudice and racism.

But despite all the horrors and absurdity, I believe there's still hope for humanity. Because they're growing up hearing about these mass murders and hate crimes, I have faith in future generations to invoke positive changes and mitigate the spread of ignorance and racism. When they become the majority in the voting population, they will ultimately decide what ideologies and values to uphold that best reflect America. Likewise, Imperium illustrates the ugliness of humankind, but it leaves us with the hope that it can evolve for the greater good.
