Red Corner

When I grow old, I hope I can look as good as Richard Gere. The Philadelphia-born actor has had a successful career well into his 60s, and Red Corner is one of the greatest courtroom dramas with him in the lead role.

For most of the 1990s, you rarely saw Asians in American films, but Red Corner is a 1997 thriller that features a predominately Chinese cast.

The story revolves around how the Western and Eastern cultures can clash with each other. Someone getting framed for murder is an old story told many times, but Red Corner amps up the narrative by placing the protagonist in Communist China, where he doesn't fluently speak the native language.

The film also introduced me to one of my favorite actresses, Bai Ling . . .
