The Magnificent Seven (2016)

Sometimes, trailers don't do movies justice. Case in point, after seeing the official trailer for the 2016 version of The Magnificent Seven, I got the impression that the movie was going to be a campy, comedic Western.

When I saw it, I was delightfully surprised by how gritty and excellent the film was, and that is precisely what I would expect from director Antoine Fuqua.

I didn't see the original The Magnificent Seven with Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen, but I did see Seven Samurai that inspired the 1960 Western film.

So with the new The Magnificent Seven, what we have is essentially a remake of a remake.

Denzel Washington leads the awesome all-star cast ensemble. Peter Sarsgaard breaks away from his often mild-mannered roles and is so good as the evil villain Bogue.

And surely it was no coincidence that the film reunited Fuqua, Washington and Ethan Hawke from Training Day. This time, Denzel and Ethan's characters are fighting on the same side.

With so many remakes and reboots in recent years, Hollywood seems to have an increasingly low tolerance for financial risks. That's understandable, but by preferring to staying within their comfort zone, major studios could be missing out on making and distributing some great films.

Some of the remakes and reboots have been perfect hits, while others make me wonder what were the producers thinking. Without reservation, the 2016 The Magnificent Seven is a definite must-see.

In the comparison of the two, I found the film's teaser has a more serious tone than its U.S. trailer counterpart . . .
