Close

I'm a big fan of international films, and it's always interesting to see foreign actors in movies of their native countries appear later in American films.

The first time I saw Iko Uwais was in The Raid, an Indonesian martial arts film; he appeared recently in Mile 22 with Mark Wahlberg, and now he's in the Netflix series, Wu Assassins.

Jack O'Connell had the lead role in '71, a British film, then appeared in Money Monster with George Clooney, directed by Jodie Foster.

Kristoffer Joner was in Norway's The Wave, and then later had a role in Mission: Impossible - Fallout with Tom Cruise.

I first discovered Noomi Rapace in the Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Now one of my favorite actresses, I saw her later in Hollywood films, including Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows and a prequel to Alien, Prometheus.

She's an excellent dramatic actress,  but I like Noomi Rapace best of all when she's in action roles. In the Netflix film Close, Rapace plays a bodyguard, assigned to protect a bratty rich teen, who just inherited her father's mining business.

It may sound like a premise for a comedy, but Close is a serious and very intense film that's not typical of a lot of action movies. The main characters are not so one-dimensional, and stories about mother-daughter relationships are rare in cinema, let alone in an action one.

Vicky Jewson, who co-wrote Close, has established herself as a skillful action and drama director--not that much different from one of my favorite filmmakers, Kathryn Bigelow. As the number of strong female leads in front of and behind the camera is only increasing, I think Hollywood should keep an eye on the young filmmaker.
