Terminator Salvation

Even though James Cameron wasn't involved in their production, Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines and Terminator Salvation are worthy sequels to the franchise he started. On the other hand, the fifth movie, Terminator Genisys, in my opinion, ruins the film series and its principal characters. With James Cameron back as producer and co-writer, Terminator: Dark Fate invigorates the franchise, but ignores all the sequels following the second movie, Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Interestingly, some people, including myself, have commented that they didn't think much of Terminator Salvation at first, but when they saw it again, they really liked the film. Released in 2009, Terminator Salvation takes an unusual narrative approach for a Terminator film by taking place in the apocalyptic "future" in the year 2018, about 21 years after Judgment Day. (As a point of reference, Kyle Reese, who was sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor, served in the Tech-Com fighting unit of the Resistance between 2021 and 2027.)

Even though it has the most action and explosions of all the films in the franchise, Terminator Salvation is still grounded with a solid script and new characters, supported by an excellent cast. In fact, the screenwriting team that wrote Terminator Salvation, John Brancato and Michael Ferris, also wrote T3: Rise Of The Machines. It may no be longer canon now, but in this day of multiverses, you can still enjoy Terminator Salvation (and T3: Rise Of The Machines).
