Fire With Fire

Once reserved mainly for low-budget films, movies released directly to video have gotten kind of a bum rap. But nowadays, studios don't seem to want to bother with marketing and releasing certain movies theatrically, so consequently, you can find some high-quality films go straight to disc and pay-per-view, many of which have A-list actors.

I'm always looking out for movie gems, and I don't care where or how I find them. I don't see movies to nitpick on trivial things, and I'm willing to look past some less-than-stellar acting or low production value. What's most important to me is their overall entertainment value.

Escape Plan with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger was released in theaters, yet its two sequels--both of which starred Stallone--were released directly to video, which is odd and surprising because they are excellent follow-ups to the first film.

Another surprisingly good movie that was released direct to video was Fire With Fire with Josh Duhamel (Transformers), Bruce Willis, and Rosario Dawson (Sin City).

Duhamel plays a firefighter who enters witness protection after witnessing a double homicide committed by a leader of a white supremacist group, brilliantly played by Vincent D'Onofrio.

Fire With Fire is not your average action thriller. Duhamel's character uses his knowledge and experience as a firefighter to fight the bad guys, and thus, the movie's clever title.

With some familiar faces and not so generic drama scenes, Fire With Fire is a movie gem for sure and comes highly recommended, even though it wasn't shown in theaters. Plus, I never get tired of watching white supremacists getting what they deserve.
