Training Day

Typically, your first day on the job is pretty lax, and nobody tries to kill you. But not for rookie narcotics cop Jake Hoyt. Nope.

I saw Training Day when it first came out in theaters in 2001, and it was so different that, initially, I didn't know what to think of it. When I saw it again later, I realized what a great film is. It goes to show, on some occasions, you can have a different opinion on a movie after seeing it a second time.

Training Day is very gritty and violent, but there's a compelling moral tale about right and wrong in the face of unorthodox ideologies. With a smart screenplay by David Ayer, superb direction by Antoine Fuqua, and brilliant performances by Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, Training Day is so good it should be inducted into the National Film Registry.
