Judge Dredd

The Exorcist is undisputedly one of the greatest films of all time. Interestingly, even though he played the title character, Max von Sydow appeared for a relatively short time in the horror classic.

Max von Sydow will probably be remembered most for the iconic role as Father Merrin, but one of the best performances from the Swedish actor was in Judge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone and Diane Lane.

Coincidentally, von Sydow and Stallone appeared together years earlier in Victory about World War II POWs playing soccer against German Nazis.

Before Blade and Batman helped launched the modern, gritty superhero movie genre in the late 1990s, there was Judge Dredd, which came out in 1995. Joseph Dredd actually doesn't have any superpowers, but, instead, is a genetically engineered clone.

Co-written by William Wisher, who wrote Terminator 2: Judgment Day with his long time friend James Cameron, Judge Dredd was panned by critics and audiences, which kind of puzzles me to this day.

There was another film from 2012 simply called Dredd starring Karl Urban that was more faithful to the source material and was highly praised, but Judge Dredd remains one of my top favorite films based on a comic book.

Inspired by the visuals of Blade Runner, Judge Dredd director Danny Cannon masterfully balanced drama, action, and comedy. The score by Alan Silvestri beautifully augments the dramatic scenes that still give me the chills.

Despite the criticisms of the movie, you can't argue that Judge Dredd doesn't have a remarkable story and cast.

Max von Sydow had a very successful acting career well into his 80s, but he didn't seem to achieve the same level of recognition as some other actors in his generation. Thankfully, films like Judge Dredd gave Max von Sydow the opportunity and screen time to really shine in his craft.
