The Spanish Prisoner

Comedians make some of the best dramatic actors. There's Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey, and Steve Carell, to name a few.

One day, while looking for a movie to watch, I stumbled upon The Spanish Prisoner with Steve Martin, and it turned out to be far from being a comedy.

Written and directed by playwright David Mamet, the mystery thriller was the first time I ever saw Steve Martin in a serious role. It was a bit strange seeing him play this supporting part at first, but he pulled off the mysterious Jimmy Dell character very well without cracking a single joke.

And if seeing Steve Martin in a non-comedy seems odd, there's Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy from Married... with Children) in a cameo, serious role in the film.

The Spanish Prisoner is a movie gem that made me become a fan of David Mamet. Like Steve Martin, Mamet went outside his normal purview and ventured into other artistic forms.

Consequently, David Mamet has made a name for himself in theater, film, and even television, and I don't know any other filmmaker who has worked in all three industries.

Who knows? Had Steve Martin and David Mamet not gone outside their comfort zones, there may not have been The Spanish Prisoner.
