Recently, James Gunn, the director of the Guardians Of The Galaxy movies, shared his "A+ Action Movies to Watch in Quarantine" on Twitter. It's a good list of domestic and international films, and I was pleasantly surprised he listed a couple of movie gems that I've been planning to showcase in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK.
Gunn also listed Seven Samurai, so I suggested he check out 13 Assassins from 2010, which looks like a ripoff of the Akira Kurosawa classic, but it's a remake of another Japanese film from 1963.
In typical Asian style, 13 Assassins has beautiful cinematography even with its subdued color palette. There are a few scenes that can be unsettling, and there's not much action until the end of the film, but this is one of the greatest samurai stories about good versus evil, and it comes highly recommended.
