The other day, Sylvester Stallone shared a picture on social media of himself with Jean-Claude Van Damme on the set of The Expendables 2. I've wholly enjoyed The Expendables films, particularly 1 and 2. They're fun, action-packed, but, best of all, they cumulated movie action hero stars I grew up with in the 80s.
Making a sequel that's as good, if not better, than its predecessor is no easy task, but The Expendables 2 is certainly one exception. Of all The Expendables movies so far, the second installment is the best one in my book.
The Expendables movies always have a great cast, but in playing the taunting bad guy, Jean-Claude Van Damme's performance was surprisingly so good in the second film. He should play villains more.
Incidentally, there's a conversation about being expendable in Rambo: First Blood II from 1985, which was written by James Cameron and Sylvester Stallone.
Like Rambo and Rocky, in typical Stallone style, The Expendables films are best viewed with a large group of people to cheer on the good guys, and despite the violence, there's this delight in seeing the bad guys get shot at, killed, and blown up because they're so evil.
The Expendables films have some of coolest action and fight sequences, and they've set the bar very high for the action movie genre. In a way, the Expendables are not so expendable after all.
