The Purge (2013)

Oftentimes, I would go see a movie without seeing its trailer or knowing what it's about merely because a favorite actor or filmmaker was involved with the project.

I'm not a big fan of horror, but when I learned The Purge was starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey (Game Of Thrones), and it was co-produced by Michael Bay, I had to check it out.

I was not disappointed.

The Purge has a seemingly ridiculous premise about an annual government-sponsored event in which murderous crimes are not outlawed for several hours. As expected, The Purge is violent, but it's not disturbingly gory, and the film is otherwise grounded in realism and very relatable characters.

The Purge may not be as widely popular as other franchises, but it has been followed by three movies and even spawned a television series. I've seen every Purge flick and have become a fan of the film series, even though they no longer have the two actors that got me to watch the first movie in the first place.

Stories of survival are ubiquitous that appeal to mass audiences, but The Purge is an imaginative modern take on the horror genre whose story goes beyond about being a murder fest and gives a perspective on our own humanity and society.
