Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans

Elevated by first-rate cast and directors, Underworld is perhaps the most underrated film series ever. The fantasy action horror movies chronicle the ongoing war between two species, vampires and werewolves called Lycans.

Like certain movie franchises, such as The Matrix and The Lord Of The Rings, you'll appreciate the Underworld films the most when you watch them successively.

So far, there have been a total of five films, but the third film, Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans, is actually a prequel. This installment is about forbidden love, slavery, and rebellion, kind of a cross between Romeo And Juliet and Spartacus.

Because it's chronologically the first movie, it's best to see Rise Of The Lycans before the first film, Underworld, with Kate Beckinsale. In fact, the ending of Rise Of The Lycans bridges directly into the first movie.

Moreover, Underworld tosses out a lot of character names and concepts. It's like having exposition put into overdrive, which can be overwhelming to audiences. That's why I highly recommend seeing Rise Of The Lycans first because it better explains the history of the war.

This is the optimal viewing order, in my opinion, to enjoy the movies:
Rise Of The Lycans doesn't have Kate Beckinsale in the lead role, but it's perhaps the best one in the whole Underworld film series, and it can even stand on its own. There have been dozens of movies about vampires and werewolves, but the characters and stories in the Underworld films are so well-written and memorable, it seems like they were based on best-selling books.
