Dark City

Dark City is a movie gem that has become a cult classic. It doesn't seem it would work, but Dark City mixes film noir in an old era with science fiction. Rufus Sewell (The Man In The High Castle, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) plays an amnesiac accused of murder. The plot thickens when he learns there's a massive conspiracy at play, and it involves a race of aliens called the Strangers who have this mind control ability called Tuning.

Australian filmmaker Alex Proyas struggled to get Dark City made, which he co-wrote, because the film was too "out there." One of my favorite screenwriters, David Goyer, was brought on board to help make the film "less weird," but he ended up help making the film weirder.

Despite its high production value and fine performances from a star-studded cast that includes Kiefer Sutherland, William Hurt, and a pre-Oscar winning Jennifer Connelly, Dark City was not financially successful when it first came out in 1998. But with its release on video, people, including myself, were discovering the movie, and Dark City would soon be recognized as one of the most underappreciated films ever, and it's the kind of mystery movie you can appreciate even more upon further viewings.
