Kin

Kin is not a typical science fiction movie. It doesn't take place in the future, in outer space, or on a spaceship, and there are no alien creatures. Nope. Instead, the film's story starts off in present-day Detroit, Michigan.

In fact, Kin is mostly a social drama about a middle-class family with two brothers, one being adopted, and their father. With a 14-year old kid as the main character, I wondered if maybe I was not the movie's target audience. But Kin surprised me with its excellent direction, cinematography, and supporting cast that includes Dennis Quaid and James Franco.

There's also a surprise cameo at the end, which leaves the film open for a sequel, maybe even a film series. Although it has a few cool action scenes, I consider Kin more of a sci-fi family drama. Regardless of the film genre, Kin is another first-rate film that came and went, and it's unfortunate nobody noticed.
