Underwater

I just got an email from a major movie theater chain about closing some of its locations in Northern California--again. 2020 has been devastating for the movie industry, particularly theaters. Many stores and restaurants can still open and have customers. Movie theater employees, on the other hand, are mostly out of work, unfortunately.

It would have been a perfect summer movie, but Underwater with Kristen Stewart came out in January, luckily before the pandemic. However, it wasn't too lucky at the box office, but Underwater is another prime example of an excellent film underperforming at the theaters. (See what I did there?)

Underwater is essentially a cross between The Abyss and Alien. Even though the premise is nothing new, the deepwater sci-fi action thriller offers fresh material and plenty of comic relief to keep the movie entertaining. Like in the Alien films and The Abyss, the characters are well-written, and the movie is perfectly paced with edge-of-your-seat action.

With movie release postponements and delayed productions, this year has been terrible for movies globally. Even still, there have been several must-see films here and there. It's not original, but, in my opinion, Underwater is definitely one of the best films of 2020.
