American Heist

I was stoked to learn Hayden Christensen was reprising his role as Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. He's an accomplished actor, but he kind of disappeared from Hollywood after the 2008 sci-fi action Jumper. I've been seeing him mostly in independent films in recent years. Shot in post-Katrina New Orleans, one of them is American Heist, which also starred Adrien Brody, another very gifted actor, and Jordana Brewster from the Fast & Furious film series.

As I alluded to in another blog post, I'm a big fan of the heist film subgenre. Crime movies about professional thieves and bank robberies usually have the same premise with a crew and such, but what helps set American Heist apart is the human story about two brothers. With four brothers of my own, with me being the youngest, I appreciate the onscreen chemistry between Adrien Brody and Hayden Christensen and their complicated sibling relationship in the movie.

American Heist has accompanied my list of favorite heist films. The familiar moral of the story in these movies is that crime doesn't pay, but American Heist is also about family and relationships. Until Obi-Wan Kenobi comes out, American Heist is one of Hayden Christensen's best films since the Star Wars prequels and is surely worth checking out.
