The Great Wall

It's always interesting to see successful actors earlier in their careers when they were relatively unknown. I never heard of Pedro Pascal until I saw The Great Wall from 2016. Now he's become well known with roles like in The Mandalorian and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984.

In The Great Wall, Pedro Pascal played opposite Matt Damon with Willem Dafoe about actual mythical creatures in ancient China and ended up at one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The movie had gotten some controversy before its release for "whitewashing," but as an Asian, I don't see a problem with the film. It's silly how people make an issue about a movie they haven't seen yet.

The Great Wall is an American film, but its director is visionary Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero, Shadow), and Damon and Pascal's characters were cleverly written into the film's story. They're European mercenaries looking for gunpowder invented by the Chinese.

The Great Wall is as epic as it is visually stunning. It's a great monster action flick, and aside from some violence (it's rated PG-13), I would go as far as saying it makes a good family film. So ignore the critics and cynics because The Great Wall is a brilliant combination of American and Chinese cinema.
