Alita: Battle Angel

I had never done this before at a movie theater, but after seeing Alita: Battle Angel for the first time, I went to buy another ticket to see it again that same day.

I heard James Cameron had been working on a movie based on the Japanese graphic novel (manga), but the project was delayed for several years, partly due to Avatar. He was going to direct Alita: Battle Angel, but that role was handed over to Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Predators, Machete), leaving credits for Cameron as producer and screenwriter.

At first, Alita: Battle Angel may seem to target a teen audience, but then the film features an Academy Award-winning ensemble cast with Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), and Mahershala Ali (Green Book). Rosa Salazar, who played Alita, was in perfect company, as she delivered a very memorable and heartfelt performance.

For some reason, it seems like it's been a long time, but Alita: Battle Angel came out only in 2019.  The movie has some of the coolest visual effects and action, but no matter how big a movie's production and stars are, the story is a major factor in a film's success. And what I appreciate the most about Alita: Battle Angel is that it's a very human story whose title character is part human.
