Identity Theft

No matter how much you protect your identity, it seems there are always scumbags who will find ways to compromise your accounts. Several months ago, my credit union alerted me to suspicious activity with my debit card. According to them, my debit card was used in Fresno, California, multiple times with over $200 in expenses. I was nowhere near Fresno at the time of the transactions, and that city is approximately 165 miles from where I live. I didn't lose my card, and I'm extremely diligent about sharing my personal information online. Yet, somehow, somebody cloned my account information onto a blank credit card.

Which brings me to this Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK. Identity Theft is an underrated road trip comedy that peruses one of today's most common cybercrimes. Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy are exceptional actors when it comes to drama, but they're also equally as funny. Melissa McCarthy always restores life back into physical comedy, and I showcased the films Bad Words and Disconnect with Bateman a while back.

Fortunately, I was credited for all the fraudulent charges. But a lot of victims are not as lucky. Many people's lives have been ruined by identity theft, which is why our dependency on the Internet should make us second-guess our online behavior. Identity Theft reminds us of how debilitating life can be when someone steals your identity. ID theft is no laughing matter, but Identity Theft turns a serious global problem into an entertaining film that is not only hilarious but also very heartwarming.
