Robin Hood (2018)

Everybody has heard how Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor, so Robinhood seems like such a dumb name for a financial services company. Wall Street is notoriously corrupt, and the Robinhood app is supposed to be for the "little guy". And yet, they didn't help the little guy with the GameStop short squeeze when they imposed restrictions on their traders who were "sticking it to the Man," which didn't seem very Robin Hoodly.

Robin Hood has been portrayed numerous times in both film and television, including animations from Disney and Looney Tunes. In a world full of wickedly destructive individuals, people need heroes for hope and inspiration. So it's no wonder why some stories about heroes, like in Seven Samurai, Batman, and Superman, are timeless and retold multiple times.

Despite its huge blockbuster success, I was never a big fan of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner. Similarly, the 2010 Robin Hood with Russell Crowe, directed by Ridley Scott, is another excellent epic film. But even though it has the familiar characters, like Marian and Friar Tuck, it's mostly an origin story with a complicated plot that probably confused a lot of people.

My most favorite movie about the English outlaw hero is the 2018 Robin Hood with Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service). Surprisingly, Leonardo DiCaprio was one of the producers, but he didn't appear in the movie, which is too bad because I think he would have made a great Sheriff of Nottingham.

Archery has been extremely popular in movies, but this Robin Hood, in particular, has some of the coolest, intense action sequences with the bow and arrow. The cast includes Jamie Foxx and Ben Mendelsohn from Rogue One, once again, playing the villain. Even though the story takes place in ancient times, some unusual and almost modern-looking architecture help give the movie a fresh look.

In a way, Robin Hood is kind of a predecessor to the modern-day superhero. Even though his legend has been interpreted in various ways and retold many times, it's interesting how this hero from centuries past still inspires some of today's movies and TV shows.
