The Forger

It usually doesn't make the news, but art forgery can be a very lucrative crime. After learning they purchased a forged painting, I've heard of people who don't even report the crime to authorities because of the shame and embarrassment. Stolen or fake artwork is not a popular subject in Hollywood movies, but moviegoers always like a good heist film.

The Forger is a movie gem with two of my favorite things in films, a heist and a character played by Christopher Plummer. However, it's not your typical crime film because it's about art forgery, and it hardly has any action. Further, it's mostly an emotional story about a father and his son who has cancer.

John Travolta plays a professional art forger caught up in the criminal world, and Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One) plays his terminally ill son. Christopher Plummer plays the father to Travolta's character, giving an interesting comparative perspective on the father-son relationship. All three deliver such sincere performances that elicit sympathy, and The Forger is one of Travolta's best films.

Released in 2015 in the U.S., The Forger is among many films Christopher Plummer appeared in the latter years of his long career, and when I reach my 80s, I hope I can be as active as he was. The multi-talented, award-winning Canadian actor is best known for his role as Georg Von Trapp, playing opposite Julie Andrews, in The Sound of Music, but as I alluded to in another blog post, one of his best and most memorable performances was in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Even in his late age, he appeared in major feature films, like Knives Out, The Last Full Measure, and All The Money In The World. The Forger may be a little known film, but it comes highly recommended, and it's bolstered by Christopher Plummer playing one of the main characters.
