The Man From Nowhere

You've heard of Bollywood, but have you heard of Hallyuwood? According to Wikipedia, Hallyuwood is "the informal term popularly used to describe the Korean-language entertainment and film industry in South Korea."

I can't say I listen to a lot of K-pop, but I've greatly admired Korean films, and in my quest for movie gems, I discovered The Man From Nowhere from 2010. It's like a Korean mixed version of Man On Fire starring Denzel Washington and Taken starring Liam Neeson with quite a bit of John Wick, which came out four years later.

In The Man From Nowhere, a pawnshop owner befriends a little girl who gets kidnapped because her mom is a drug addict who got involved with a dangerous criminal organization. Our hero has a secret past, and it's all downhill from there for the baddies.

The Man From Nowhere is one of the first movies that caught my attention about Korean filmmaking. Parasite may have taken the top Oscar prize for Best Picture in 2020, but many great films have come out of South Korea before. I featured The Tower and The Age Of Shadows a while back in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK, but The Man From Nowhere is another must-see movie from Hallyuwood.
