Wind River

It seems I've been hearing about WandaVision as much as The Mandalorian. There's no doubt Disney had quickly become a heavy hitter in the streaming wars. But I have a confession. Despite being a huge Star Wars fan, I still haven't subscribed to Disney+. I just keep putting it off. Months would pass, and next thing I know, they're talking about the second season of The Mandalorian.

Be that as it may, I have seen every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Phases 1 through 3), and Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, is one of my favorite characters. I didn't watch Full House when I was a kid, but Olsen turned out to be such a good actress. And she does an accent so naturally, even if it's for a fictional country, Sokovia.

Murder mystery thrillers are standard fare, but Wind River is unusual because it takes place on an Indian reservation and is based on true events. Directors are often screenwriters, but I seldomly see screenwriters become directors. Taylor Sheridan, the screenwriter of the Sicario films, wrote and directed the film that stars MCU co-stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. But this is not some weird Avengers spin-off movie. Olsen plays an FBI agent flown in to investigate a homicide and teams up with Renner who plays a tracker in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

I must emphasize Wind River is a murder mystery, so there are gruesome scenes and violence, but it's still an excellent movie of the genre. I find the film's locale in Wyoming and mellow pacing intriguing, and Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon) is one of the film's producers. Earning multiple accolades, Jeremy Renner has already established himself as an A-list actor, but Elizabeth Olsen is another standout in Wind River, and with her talent, I hope she does more movies, especially after the success of WandaVision.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go subscribe to Disney+.
