Exit Wounds

In the early 1990s, Ice Cube made a bit of a splash when he starred in the John Singleton film Boyz n the Hood. At the time, it was kind of a novelty to have famous rappers become actors in major motion pictures, and I remember I got so giddy when I heard Ice-T was going to be in New Jack City.

Musicians have broadened their careers for decades, so hip hop artists should be no exception. Some have had great success in transitioning from the music industry into Hollywood, like Ice Cube, Ice-T, LL Cool J, Tupac Shakur, Queen Latifah, 50 Cent, and Will Smith, to name a few.

Some time ago in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK, I featured Romeo Must Die, which featured DMX in a supporting role. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak later worked with DMX again in another action film, Exit Wounds, but this time, DMX played opposite Steven Seagal. Not so coincidentally, Exit Wounds also has DMX's co-stars from Romeo Must Die, Isaiah Washington and the ever comical Anthony Anderson.

DMX had a rough childhood, so the experience helped bring authenticity to his performance in the film. Exit Wounds is 20 years old, but it's still one of my top favorite police action movies ever, and it's undoubtedly one of DMX's best films. I only wish there could be more movies with him in a lead role.

Rest in power, DMX.
