Sanctum

While Mars space exploration has captured people's curiosity and fascination for many years, a vast amount of planet Earth still has not been explored. Employing the same 3D Fusion Camera System used in Avatar, Sanctum is a cave diving action-adventure that takes place near Australia, and even though it was marketed as a James Cameron film, he only served as Executive Producer. Given the film's overall style and quality, however, it could be mistaken that Cameron wrote and directed Sanctum because it has the look and tone that's very much like his 1989 film The Abyss.

Sanctum is about an exploration team in the deep caves of Papua New Guinea, and just like in The Abyss, a major storm creates havoc for our heroes. There are numerous movies about mountain climbing and underwater diving, but Sanctum combines both worlds with its story revolving around cave diving.

Before Sanctum, I've never heard of rebreathers. Unlike scuba equipment you typically see divers use, a rebreather basically "recycles" the exhaled carbon dioxide, so significantly fewer air bubbles are released into the water, and it allows for longer dive times at greater depths.

Released a few years after Avatar, Sanctum embodies several characters and subplots, but the movie comes down to the relationship between a father and his son and their strained relationship. Again, it's a very human story, not much unlike in The Abyss. Even though James Cameron's name has been tagged with Sanctum, there are no A-listers for any of the key characters. But we don't need A-list actors for a good film. Based on actual events, Sanctum is another lesser-known film that's another must-see.
