G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Snake Eyes is one of the coolest action characters, yet, as an adult, he doesn't speak a single word of dialogue in the G.I. Joe films. The G.I. Joe film franchise didn't need a reboot, in my opinion, but, nonetheless, I'm looking forward to seeing Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins next month.

I've seen G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra not once, not twice, not four times, but three times, and it wasn't because I like Sienna Miller, who played Baroness. I swear. For the first two viewings, I thought the film was kind of meh. But for some reason, I really liked the movie the third time seeing it. I've always thought G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra moved a little too fast, and I appreciated the plot better the third time around. On the other hand, the fight scenes between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, particularly when they were boys, have always been pure awesomeness.

I was surprised to learn Channing Tatum didn't want to be in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and hates the movie, which came out in 2009. He hadn't achieved stardom quite yet back then, and he ended up doing the film to avoid legal issues with Paramount Pictures.

As much as I like The Rise of Cobra, I thought the direction and writing were slightly better in the sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which added Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis to the cast. And as typical with today's film series, you have to watch the previous film to understand the sequel.

There are numerous lesser-known but highly talented filmmakers, some of which are Black, Hispanic, and Asian. With G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In The Heights) establishes himself as a leading action director.

G.I. Joe is an underrated film franchise. The movies have been about G.I. Joe battling its archenemy, the terrorist organization Cobra, but they have also focused considerably on Snake Eyes. So it seems fitting that he would have his own movie. Even if the reboot comes out on top, the original G.I. Joe films are excellent in their own right, especially the second film, Retaliation.
