Logan Lucky

Occasionally, a film really surprises me. Looking at its trailer alone, a movie may not look much, but when you have a cast that includes Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig, you have to give Logan Lucky a look.

A few weeks before the coronavirus outbreak was declared a pandemic in 2020, I showcased Contagion, directed by Steven Soderbergh, in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK. Soderbergh has made several excellent films, but he's perhaps best known as the director of Ocean's Eleven and its sequels. Also directed by Steven Soderbergh, Logan Lucky is a comedy heist film very much like the Ocean's films with their signature dry humor.

Channing Tatum and Adam Driver play brothers from a sort of dysfunctional family, and with the help of their sister, they're planning a heist at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Coincidentally, like his character, Adam Driver actually served in the military as a United States Marine. Daniel Craig plays an explosive expert hired to access the vault--while he's in prison.

Logan Lucky is a comedy film that's delightfully smart and heartwarming as it's funny. I'm a big fan of heist films, and even though I can't say it's my top favorite, Logan Lucky is still highly recommended.
