Foster Boy

I may not be a parent myself, but it doesn't take a child psychologist to recognize the destructive consequences of children being raised in abusive and uncaring environments. A lot of people are not cut out to be parents. Many societal ills can be attributed to bad parenting, or the lack thereof, and people who lack the financial resources and emotional capacity should not be having children.

Written by an actual Chicago attorney, Foster Boy touches on a subject that is uncommon in films. The foster care system is indeed broken, but, of course, not all foster parents are bad.

From Shaquille O'Neal (yes, that Shaquille O'Neal), who served as an Executive Producer, Foster Boy is a courtroom drama based on real-life events about a corporate lawyer who is ordered by a judge to represent an indigent in a civil case.

From Full Metal Jacket and Vision Quest to Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Matthew Modine is a great actor with a long successful career and plays the reluctant lawyer in Foster Boy. The wonderful cast also includes the scene-stealing Louis Gossett Jr. as the judge and Julie Benz (Rambo) as the defendant. But another standout is the newcomer Shane Paul McGhie, who played the foster care recipient suing the private foster care company.

The flaws of the foster care system are seldomly discussed in the media, yet we hear so much about crimes. There is an abundance of films about social issues, but a movie like Foster Boy is long overdue. With such a great story and incredible performances, Foster Boy is a must-see movie gem that is worthy of a Best Picture award.
