Brotherhood of the Wolf

Unbelievably, there are classic hit movies that haven't been released on Blu-ray and Digital HD. For example, you can't find True Lies on any streaming service (not legally anyway), and The Abyss just recently became available on Amazon Prime in HD. Brotherhood of the Wolf is an international movie I've been wanting to showcase in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK for a while, but it, too, wasn't available on Blu-ray and HD streaming.

I discovered Brotherhood of the Wolf many years ago at a Best Buy. Intrigued by the DVD case cover art, I rented the movie on Netflix, back when they were primarily renting DVD movies via snail mail, and it immediately became one of my top favorite films.

Last year in April, filmmaker James Gunn tweeted a list of action movies he suggested watching during quarantine, and I was delighted he had Brotherhood of the Wolf on the list. I quote tweeted to Universal Pictures to implore them to release the movie in High Definition.

Recently, I was browsing through upcoming movies in my Cinemark Theatres mobile app and, to my surprise, saw the Brotherhood of the Wolf was on the list as a re-release. Soon afterward, I learned the French film was finally available as an imported Blu-ray and on streaming.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is a horror-action thriller based on a legend about a monster terrorizing a province of France in the 1700s. But as the plot thickens, the story goes well beyond being a monster movie with conspiracy and betrayal.

Even though it's a French film from 2001, there are familiar cast members--Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Ocean's Twelve), and Mark Dacascos from John Wick 3.

Thankfully, Universal Pictures has finally released the film on HD video. I want to showcase underappreciated and underrated movies in my blog, and of all the movie gems I've discovered, Brotherhood of the Wolf is my greatest find so far.
