Hero

Watching a Zhang Yimou movie is a study in the art of filmmaking. His films encompass gorgeous cinematography, masterful storytelling, dialogue, action, and editing. But what also sets Yumou apart from other Asian filmmakers is his remarkable use of color.

With all its triumphs and contributions, China has one of the most intriguing histories. During the Warring States period, Ancient China was divided into seven regions. From the director of Shadow and The Great Wall, Hero tells the story of the ambitious king who wanted to unite all the warring states and the plot to assassinate him.

Tony Leung, who played Xu Wenwu in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is in the film as well as Zhang Ziyi from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I'm not a fan of "wire fu" when it looks too unnatural, and the history is mixed in with a bit of fantasy fiction, but even still, Hero is perhaps Jet Li's best film and is so beautifully shot and told.
