Ava

When there's an opportunity, I like to piss off misogynists. In this day and age, it's unbelievable we still see as much slavery, racism, antisemitism, sexism, and misogyny as we do now.

When I can, I've tried to feature movies with female characters who project strength and intelligence more than ones that simply follow the trope of the damsel in distress. I actually find strong female characters attractive, especially when they kick ass, and I've showcased several films with such characters in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK, like Edge of TomorrowClose, Alita: Battle Angel, Underwater, Blue Steel, Harriet, Sucker Punch, and G.I. Jane.

Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton were a couple of leading action actresses that paved the way for others. Now, many actresses have shown that women can be equal to men in the action genre, like Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson, and Kate Beckinsale.

Occasionally, I'm surprised by actresses who show they can kick ass as well as they can act, and I wish they would do more action films, like Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. Recently, I got a kick watching Ana de Armas (Knives Out) in No Time To Die because she was doing cool fight-action scenes in a long dress and high heels!

For this week, I want to showcase a femme fatale film, Ava, with Jessica Chastain. The award-winning cast includes John Malkovich, Colin Farrell, Joan Chen (The Last Emperor), and Geena Davis, who was the scene-stealer.

What sets Ava apart from the other films about assassins is that there's a lot of depth with the lead character. The movie moves kind of slow at times, but it's balanced with memorable scenes and great fight sequences.

Jessica Chastain is another excellent actress who has proven she can also do action. Props to her, and I hope there will be a sequel to Ava because it certainly has the potential to be an action movie franchise like John Wick.
