Timecop

So I heard the fifth Indiana Jones installment is going to be a time travel movie. At first, it sounds like a dumb idea for George Lucas' iconic character, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt, and the writing better be excellent.

Time travel films are, well, timeless, and I've featured a few so far in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK--The Final Countdown, Timeline, Looper, and Predestination. Another underappreciated film is Timecop, based on the Dark Horse Comics.

The creators of Timecop, Mike Richardson and Mark Verheiden, were involved with the movie adaptation as writers, so you can't complain about the movie not being faithful to the source material.

As in most time travel films, the plot is about altering the past to change the present or future, but in Timecop, like in Predestination, there is also a government agency to enforce time travel.

Interestingly, Peter Hyams (2010: The Year We Make Contact) served as both director and cinematographer for Timecop, which is unusual for a film, and the cast includes the great Bruce McGill (The Insider), Ron Silver (Blue Steel), and there's a familiar face from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Timecop shouldn't just be remembered for the famous Jean-Claude Van Damme split. It's very well-written, directed, and shot, and the movie's got some memorable, cool scenes, like the opening.

Released in 1994, Timecop was doing things before other time-themed movies, like Minority Report, Predestination, and Avengers: Endgame, so in a way, Timecop was kind ahead of its time (*bah-dum-tish*). Timecop is not just one of Jean-Claude Van Damme's best movies; it's one of my most favorite time travel movies.
