Cloud Atlas

The Wachowskis and science fiction go together like rice and stir fry. I would love to see them write and direct Star Wars movies. In the meantime, I will take a Matrix sequel from them any day, but it's too bad only the older sibling of the dynamic duo was involved with the upcoming sequel, The Matrix Resurrections.

The Wachowskis were so ahead of their time when they made The Matrix. The 1999 action sci-fi thriller inspired other movies, became a pop culture phenomenon, and helped promote martial arts action in American films. The Matrix was the Wachowskis' second movie, and they already established themselves as exemplary directors and screenwriters.

I have featured The Matrix in Ted's MOVIE  OF THE WEEK and still think The Matrix trilogy is one of the most underappreciated ever. While all the movies have been financially successful, the sequels, particularly the third film, had their share of criticisms. However, as I like to preach, to fully understand and appreciate some film series, you should watch all the movies successively.

Oh, and by the way, the Wachowskis are transgender. Yeah, when they made The MatrixThe Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions, they were Larry and Andy Wachowski. Now, they are Lana and Lilly Wachowski, respectively.

One of the Wachowskis' less discussed films is Cloud Atlas, which is based on the novel of the same title by David Mitchell. It's gone full circle because Mitchell is also one of the writers of The Matrix Resurrections. For Cloud Atlas, the Wachowskis share writing and directing credit with Tom Tykwer, but you probably wouldn't be able to distinguish the filmmaking style among them.

With Tom Hanks and Halle Berry leading the excellent cast, Cloud Atlas is a potpourri of mini-movies that span different periods, including a dystopian future. It's a little confusing at first, but the stories are captivating enough to hold your interest, and then you understand their commonality in the end. Speaking of the end, watch the end credits to see some surprising revelations of the cast members.

I'm looking forward to The Matrix Resurrections coming out this week, but I suggest checking out the Wachowskis' other works, like V For Vendetta and Jupiter Ascending. Cloud Atlas, however, is a must-see. It's an underrated film and perhaps the Wachowskis' best since The Matrix and its sequels. And that's the true-true.
