Draft Day

There's probably not one Ivan Reitman movie that someone has not seen or heard of. From Stripes to Ghostbusters to Kindergarten Cop to Beethoven to Space Jam, the film legend has a large collection of hit movies under his name.

While he may not be as well known as other filmmakers, Ivan Reitman also produced over 70 movies and TV shows in addition to directing classic comedies. One of his lesser-known films is Draft Day from 2014, an underdog sports movie, but not in the traditional sense.

Films about underdogs are often about sports teams and players. In Draft Day, Kevin Costner plays the general manager of the Cleveland Browns who is going through a rough patch in his life. Costner is accompanied by a great cast that includes Chadwick Boseman, Jennifer Garner, and Denis Leary.

Even though it's about NFL football, Draft Day is not a sports action film per se. It's almost the opposite of that genre and is dialogue-heavy. In fact, you really don't see any football plays until about halfway through the film when they review some old tapes.

Further, Draft Day is not a comedy, but it can't be an Ivan Reitman movie without some humor. It's an insightful movie about the inner workings of the NFL Draft. Draft Day is a very underappreciated film, and it was produced and directed by Ivan Reitman.

At age 75, Ivan Reitman is another Hollywood legend gone too soon, but he's left a rare legacy whose classic films can be enjoyed by both kids and adults.

Rest in peace, good sir. You will be missed.
