Eraser

When I was little, I had such a crush on Vanessa Williams. Now, as an adult, I believe her life story would make a great, inspiring biopic. After a humiliating scandal and giving up her crown as the first Black Miss America, Vanessa Williams picked herself up and became highly successful in music, film, and television. She overcame such adversity and turned her misfortune into one of the greatest comeback stories.

I might be biased, but Vanessa Williams is a fine actress, and it's too bad she hasn't starred in more major motion pictures. But she did have a starring role with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1996 action thriller Eraser. A reboot titled Eraser: Reborn is coming out this year on video and HBO Max, so it's only natural I select Eraser for Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK.

In the original film, Schwarzenegger plays a U.S. Marshal who protects a defense contractor executive, played by Vanessa Williams. It's always delightful having acting legends appear in a film, and such is the case with Eraser having James Caan and James Coburn. But, of course, the stars of the movie are Schwarzenegger and Williams, and Williams holds her own, playing opposite the megastar and even doing some action.

While the premise of a bodyguard/protector hero is hardly anything new, the United States Witness Security Protection Program (WITSEC), aka the Federal Witness Protection Program (WPP), is something you don't see often, and the subject matter easily makes for a television or action film series.

It doesn't have as many one-liner jokes as in past flicks, but Eraser is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's best films, despite what the mixed reviews may suggest. In fact, I think Eraser is one of the most underrated action movies ever.
