Rounders

I'm a terrible liar, so I don't think I'd be good at poker, although I've had people say to me they can't tell when I'm joking or being serious.

I didn't know what a rounder was until I saw the movie Rounders. A rounder makes a living playing poker, typically traveling to different places for a game. As in any game, rounders can cheat or play "straight" to win.

Starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton, Rounders is like The Hustler and White Men Can't Jump, but in the professional poker world.

Films about subcultures truly take you into another world, like breakdancing and street racing. But despite their differences, they often share a commonality with stories about human struggles and striving for dreams.

Subcultures also have their own vocabulary and slang, but Rounders is well written so that anybody who is not familiar with poker can understand the movie despite all the jargon.

Rounders is an underappreciated bromance film. Edward Norton is one of my all-time favorite actors, and I'm regularly reminded what a great actor he is. Norton and Damon have great onscreen chemistry, and it may not be for everyone, but Rounders is an excellent movie. Straight up.
